Dear Parents/Guardians,
I will be teaching your child mathematics and science this year. Please refer to the Weekly Assignments tab to see your child's daily assignments. We will be using Seesaw for our Learning Management System. All of the assignments will be posted in Seesaw daily. Please refer to the Orientation packet to find your child's Seesaw login information. Seesaw has a parent connect feature where you will be able to see all of your child's completed assignments. I have included a video which explains how Seesaw works. Click on the Seesaw tab to view this video and also a video for students to watch.
I use a program called IXL as an enrichment/remediation program in my classroom. Your child will complete these assignments on his/her iPAD. Please refer to the Orientation packet to find your child's username and password. Please make sure your child is fluent with his/her multiplication facts by the end of September. There are several apps that are on your child's iPad that he/she can use to practice math facts. This will greatly help with speed and accuracy when learning the 5th grade math standards.
The major concepts your child will learn this year are as follows: Data and Graphing, Properties of Multiplication and Division, Using Models to Multiply and Divide Fractions, Understand Place Value Using Metric Measurement, Using Models to Add and Subtract Fractions and Decimals, Using Models to Multiply Whole Numbers and Decimals, and Classifying Quadrilaterals. We will have learning tasks often to maintain skills. Quizzes will be given throughout the unit and tests will be given at the end of every unit. Your child's math notebook is a good place to go for guidance on homework. We will be creating a digital notebook this year and it can be found in their journal on Seesaw.
Science is broken into the following categories: Weather, Matter & Energy, Force & Motion, Cells & Body Systems, and Ecosystems. Science vocabulary can be found in your child's science notebook. This notebook will be digital and can also be found in the journal section on Seesaw. This year your child will take a Science End of Grade Test.
I assign homework Monday through Thursday nights (during remote learning homework will not be assigned). Math is not about memorizing steps. True understanding means that a student can teach the concept to someone else using their own thoughts and language. When your child finishes their homework, have a conversation about how and where this could be used in everyday activities. Your child will also be assigned several science and math projects throughout the year. More information will be sent home regarding projects in the month they are assigned.
Thank you in advance for all of the hard work and dedication you devote to your child! Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns. I have high expectations for all of my students. Everyone can and will succeed!
